If your only criteria for hiring a home inspector is a low price then you need to re-evaluate your reasoning for having a home inspection in the first place.
For most people, buying a home is the most expensive purchase they will ever make. This is no time to shop for a cheap unqualified inspector. Do not let your real estate agent, another inspector or anyone else talk you into skimping here. The cost of a home inspection is very small relative to the cost of the home being purchased.
You can shop for price but you will more than likely hire an inferior inspector and receive an inferior home inspection. The $25 or $50 saved up front with an inferior home inspector may mean thousands of dollars spent later when you realize the inspector did a poor job.

Home Inspectors offering cheap rates are able to do so for several reasons:
- they are inexperienced and cheap rates are how they are able to draw clients
- they have little or now overhead costs, meaning they do not carry the proper insurance, are not members of any home inspector trade association and prepare poorly crafted reports
- they have not taken any formal education and do not have the required background to be a home inspector (the home inspection business is not a government regulated profession)
- they do volume work for real estate agents and typically write "soft" reports to maintain good relations with the referring agents
- they do not spend the time or money on continuing education
- they only spend 20 to 30 minutes on site
- and for some home inspectors offering low rates, all these points apply
